Offline backup

Unread postby DJRenegade » Sun Apr 24, 2016 2:39 am

Hi guys.
I have started to get a lot of files, mainly photos and video, that I want to backup offline in the safest way possible.

I have contemplated some form of NAS setup. As I am very bad at normally keeping backups I want it to be a separate system I can consciously think about when downloading pictures from my phone or camera, instead of just shoving them all in a folder on one of my hard drives.

What recommendations would guys give me. It has to be;
- Cheap-ish
- Safe (so if a HDD fails I am not fucked)
- Secure
- Preferably accessible from anywhere over the net

I don't need a massive amount of space so around 2TB should be plenty :)
Rene is the best!!

Not my definition of offline backup - but I tend to do it via a synology box. The boxes themselves are about £150 for a bottom end unit that will take two drives - put two 2tb or more drives in and run in mirrored raid. Otherwise, build yourself a seperate pc with low end parts that won't use much power and stick drives in that and one of the open source nas projects on it in the same mirrored raid. There's alternatives to synology but they're by far my favourite based on their functionality. They have an app that is a little like Dropbox in that you have your own private cloud sync

If you have a tendency to leave your box on over night there is a real cheap mans solution. You can do it on the cheap by getting yourself just a simple external HDD and then looking into using a utility from windows called Robocopy (this is an advanced form of xcopy and offers a wider variety of options.)

Once you've got those in place create yourself a .bat file with the necessary commands to replicate what you want and then create a task schedule in Windows to fire off in the early hours of the morning so it doesn't disturb your gaming. :)
I wanted to protect everything. But I failed, and that's the sin I bare. So this time, I can't fail to protect them!

I used to do stuff like that and have used both of those tools - however, these days I'm more about the power efficiency so prefer to find a low powered machine to do everything instead!
